First single-use plastic bags were banned in 2018 and now South Australia has made history by being the first Australian State to ban all single-use plastics, including straws, cutlery, polystyrene cups, bowls, plates and clamshell containers.
But what is a single use product? For most people it is about using a product once and tossing in the rubbish.
What does this mean for businesses?
For businesses, in SA, as of March 1st 2021 these new laws dictate that selling, supplying and distributing single use plastic products is now illegal. Fines will be enforced for those companies who do not comply, with the maximum court penalty being $20,000.
What are the concerns for businesses?
Businesses will now need to look for alternatives and source reusable products. Those with excess supply of these now prohibited items will need to arrange a potential return to their suppliers or forfeit them for recycling.
What does this mean for consumers?
For consumers, these new laws do not prohibit customers bringing their own straws to establishments and allows businesses to choose to supply them when requested due to medical or disability needs.
What are the concerns for consumers?
While most of us can certainly agree that this drastic call for action was very much needed to protect our planet, you might be wondering what cups you can bring to playgrounds, picnics and other outdoor events? We certainly don’t want our kids running around with glass!
