For businesses, in SA, as of March 1st 2021 these new laws dictate that selling, supplying and distributing single use plastic products is now illegal. Fines will be enforced for those companies who do not comply, with the maximum court penalty being $20,000.

Businesses will now need to look for alternatives and source reusable products. Those with excess supply of these now prohibited items will need to arrange a potential return to their suppliers or forfeit them for recycling.
What does this mean for consumers?
For consumers, these new laws do not prohibit customers bringing their own straws to establishments and allows businesses to choose to supply them when requested due to medical or disability needs.
